Mattie can't remember a time before she and William lived alone on a mountain together。 She must never make him upset。 But when Mattie discovers the mutilated body of a fox in the woods, she realizes that they're not alone after all。

There's something in the woods that wasn't there before, something that makes strange cries in the night, something with sharp teeth and claws。

I really liked this。 Not loved--just liked。 The concept is brilliant--an abusive marriage set against the background of a wilderness that is dangerous enough without the literal cryptid stalking its midst。 The execution is mostly also brilliant, true to Henry's skill and hard work as a storyteller。 I usually love her work and this is no exception--except for the ending, which I found to be weak and a bit disconnected from the theme of the novel。 This is a common occurrence with supernatural horr I really liked this。 Not loved--just liked。 The concept is brilliant--an abusive marriage set against the background of a wilderness that is dangerous enough without the literal cryptid stalking its midst。 The execution is mostly also brilliant, true to Henry's skill and hard work as a storyteller。 I usually love her work and this is no exception--except for the ending, which I found to be weak and a bit disconnected from the theme of the novel。 This is a common occurrence with supernatural horror of the best variety, so it may just be a downside to the genre。 All that said, I still really enjoyed this book and found it compelling。 Highly recommended for other fans of Henry or the genre。 。。。more

Rounded up to 3。75 stars。 I listened to this book on Audible。 🎧 I probably should’ve read the physical book instead。 I’m going to be that girl who complains that the protagonist in the story, who is a woman being held captive by an abusive man in a secluded cabin on a snowy mountain, while fighting off a creature that’s killing everything in its path, is too whiny and overly dramatic。 I believe this was the narrator and not so much the character, if that makes sense。 It was hard to take seriousl Rounded up to 3。75 stars。 I listened to this book on Audible。 🎧 I probably should’ve read the physical book instead。 I’m going to be that girl who complains that the protagonist in the story, who is a woman being held captive by an abusive man in a secluded cabin on a snowy mountain, while fighting off a creature that’s killing everything in its path, is too whiny and overly dramatic。 I believe this was the narrator and not so much the character, if that makes sense。 It was hard to take seriously because of the over-acting。Also, it probably didn’t help that I was listening to this atmospheric story that takes place on a snowy mountain while I was sitting at a sunny pool on an 85° day。The book probably would’ve been a four-star read, although I would have liked more background on the creature and it’s origin and what ended up happening to it。 All in all this was a decent story。Special thanks to my good friend Dorian, here on Goodreads, who completely distracted me for the last 30 minutes, and most pivotal part of this book。 😎❤️ 。。。more

horror survival storyNear the Bone is my second Christina Henry story and I seem to be on a roll because I enjoyed this one as much as the last one I read (The Ghost Tree)。 This is a psychological as well as slasher style horror story。 There are plenty of double meanings together with a setting that feels almost claustrophobic。As the story begins we meet Mattie。 She’s doing the rounds, checking the traps for animals caught when she comes across a dead fox。 The fox hasn’t been eaten, just mauled and left, which is unusual in itself, added to that, the strange tracks that accompany the kill really give Mattie pause (paws or maybe even claws) for thought。 They look like bear prints, but on a massive scale。 Mattie doesn’t however have time to dwell, no lollygagging or gathering wool here, back to the cabin with haste before she receives punishment for her tardy behaviour。 She tells her husband of her grisly find and the two set out to follow the tracks – which mysteriously disappear。Mattie has lived with William for as long as she can remember。 she sometimes has snatches of fleeting memories that elude her before she can grasp their meaning。 Meanwhile, William is always there, watching, controlling, and punishing her。 Mattie has learned to be quiet, to speak only when spoken to and to make herself almost unnoticeable。 The appearance of a second monster into her life spells real trouble but maybe also the possibility of escape。I’m not going to go into the relationship between Mattie and Williams other than to say it is an abusive one。 Mentally and physically abusive (so keep that in mind)。 Mattie is on the verge of becoming a shadow self, she’s beaten, raped and starved on a regular basis and yet, because of the length of time she has spent enduring such horrors she doesn’t realise just how terrible her situation really is。 She is William’s wife, she must obey him and be dutiful。 The appearance of a second monster on their isolated mountain really upsets the strange existence they have。 First, William becomes almost unhinged about the presence of an unusual creature sharing their space (with reason as will be eventually revealed)。 Second, rumours of a mysterious critter brings strangers to the mountain in search of myths and legends。 Both of these act as catalysts to trigger memories in Mattie that leave her questioning the life she has accepted as normal。Okay, I won’t really go into the plot with this one。 We have a creature capable of stalking unseen and unheard, the very forests themselves go quiet upon its approach。 It can remain unseen if it wishes and it’s tracks oftentimes disappear。 We have William, a monster himself by all accounts。 Armed and dangerous he resolves to rid the mountain of this newcomer and threat to his life。So, the setting is great。 High on a mountain。 No roads。 Freezing cold temperatures。 This is not the sort of place that people seek out as a rule。 It really plays into the story giving it a ‘closed’ feel。 Hemmed in for the most part by cliffs there is basically one route on or off the mountain。 No electricity, wi-fi or roads。 It’s your basic nightmare, particularly when there’s a huge creature running around outside and for the most part if feels like the characters run around in ever decreasing circles never gaining any momentum。The characters。 Well, William is an absolute horror and almost invincible in the way that only truly bad characters in horror stories can be。 Mattie is a great character。 You really, I mean REALLY, feel for her。 The terror and desperation she feels on a regular basis – before three strangers stumble into her life and unwittingly try to help her – giving her not just new feelings about what is really happening but also massive guilt because they have now become her responsibility。What I really liked about this is the tension that Henry creates。 The characters quite often stumble around in circles making outrageous mistakes, much akin to teenagers in a Halloween movie, and the only one that seems capable or really perceiving the threat is Mattie。 Strangely enough, Mattie and the creature almost seem to understand each other in the most unusual way。 I wont’ say more because I don’t want to give away spoilers。The other thing that I really liked is that this is a look at the real monsters that are present in our everyday lives that we simply fail to see。 Of course, a huge hairy creature with long claws, a monumental roar and exceptional strength and speed, yes, now that’s a monster, but at the same time maybe it’s simply a creature also trying to survive on instinct。 I really enjoyed this one。 I’m not going to say it didn’t have a few plot holes here or there or that at times it wasn’t frustrating in the way that slasher horrors can be annoying, but, it kept me pretty much glued to the page。 A strange combination of psychological thriller and creature feature horror。 Sleeping with the Enemy meets Predator meets ‘insert whatever horror you deem most appropriate after reading’。 To be clear, when I say I ‘enjoyed’ this – well, I was hooked, about Mattie’s story initially but then about the creature and the final outcome。 However, perhaps ‘enjoyed’ is the wrong word in some respects。 To be clear, there are strong themes present here plus a level of slasher horror that will make some readers grab for the nearest cushion to hide behind。 You have been warned。I received a copy through Netgalley, courtesy of the publisher, for which my thanks。 The above is my own opinion。 。。。more

I read this book rather quickly。 The multiple subplots keep me entertained。 I found myself rooting for the protagonist, as I should be, but I also found myself wanting more。 I think it’s a great quick read, but the ending left something to be desired。

This one is a pretty good mystery-suspense book with such a great atmosphere and well-drawn setting and characters。 It felt very claustrophobic and creepy。 I also love the psychological aspect of the main character; her trauma, her fear, her feeling of being powerless, she conquers that all to escape her misery。 It is, overall, an enjoyable and compelling book。 I am just not sure if it is horror, or perhaps it also borderlines the thriller genre。 Nevertheless, it is a suspenseful piece of work!

Hurry, hurry, the monster's in the woods, and it's coming for you。A huge thank you to Berkley Press and NetGalley for my copy of this book。 Lost Boy is one of my favorite books I've discovered since I started blogging。 So I was very excited to jump into another book by Christina Henry。 That being said, there are trigger warnings after this paragraph。 I'm going to do my best to avoid spoilers, but there will be mention of kidnapping and domestic abuse。Let me start off by saying I really liked thi Hurry, hurry, the monster's in the woods, and it's coming for you。A huge thank you to Berkley Press and NetGalley for my copy of this book。 Lost Boy is one of my favorite books I've discovered since I started blogging。 So I was very excited to jump into another book by Christina Henry。 That being said, there are trigger warnings after this paragraph。 I'm going to do my best to avoid spoilers, but there will be mention of kidnapping and domestic abuse。Let me start off by saying I really liked this book。 I was all geared up for a creature feature and trapped on a snowy moment。 And, I got both in spades。 This book had the icky factor with the creature's cave and the trees。 I love how the woods would go silent as the creature approached, and the roar you could feel in our bones。 Actually, I have a question about that sound it makes, to digress for half a second。 Does the audiobook have the sound in it? I would love to know exactly how it sounds。 Like a cross between a Wampa and a sasquatch? I'm just curious。 Either way, all of that played in so at the end of the book I was getting nervous for our characters。, mostly just me mumbling to myself "don't go in there" and "run fast"。I also really liked that we don't find out what the creature is。 I mean I hate it because I'm a sucker for any kind of cryptid, but the creature isn't the real monster of this story。 So I was okay with the fact we never got a good glimpse at it。 Too busy running! Here's what the trigger warnings come into play。 Why I read the synopsis of Near the Bone maybe I was too wrapped up in the creature feature to notice, by the domestic violence aspect of the story sort of caught me by surprise。 This wasn't a turn-off for me because while those moments were uncomfortable, they weren't used gratuitously。 It's hard to explain without giving too much of the plot away, but the violence made a twisted bit of sense when you realize the kind of bad man William was。 HOWEVER! Yes, there is a, however。 I feel like Berkley Press should have done better at warning people about this aspect of Near the Bone。 This part of the book plays a big part in our main character's, Mattie, journey。 It is also very trigging for a lot of people, and I feel like the publisher, Goodreads, and NetGalley should have been better at these triggers。 Because within the first chapter you see what kind of door prize William is。 This is actually the reason this book isn't a five-star read for me。 The line, "bad things happen when William's mad", wasn't really enough warning for me。 Because not a bad man, he's a waste of space。 So the lack of warnings from the three mentioned platforms knocks off a star for me。But, to jump back into the positives。 One of my favorite characters that Christina Henry writes is villains。 This is my third book by Henry, and William almost edges out Pan from Lost Boys。 Almost。 While William has absolutely no redeeming qualities, Henry writes him so well he's so easy to hate。 From the first chapter, you want something bad to happen because it couldn't happen to a better person。 I also really like the plot around William and he connects to Maddie。 While Maddie has no memory of how she met William, as the reader you start to peace that mystery together rather quickly。 Or, you do if you have seen more than one season of Criminal Minds。I love the good character that is so vile and written so well, you hate even the way they breathe。 Now Maddie, our main character, took me a second to really like。 She would get the moments where I was really starting to like her, and she was finding her inner strength and I was rooting for her。 Then Samantha happened, and while I understand where this character stems from, I wanted to throttle these characters。 And, maybe that was the point。 At first, Samantha seems like she's giving Mattie the strength to leave William, to find a way out。 But, as the story progresses and tragedy happens, Samantha gets annoying, and I got no greater than joy than Maddie finding a backbone and silencing that part of her mind。 And, while Maddie is an unreliable narrator, I really liked that we got the story through her eyes。 To see her find herself again despite all the terrible things that are happening around her。I'm just gonna say it, I hated all three of the cryptid hunters。 Probably Griffin more than any of the others, but all three were terrible。 But, really Griffin took the cake。 I understand that he saw women hurt and wanted to help, but no means no my dude。 If you would have just listened to Maddie you wouldn't have -Hello Spoiler Alert- ended handing from a tree by your insides。 Now, I do like the purpose of these three, and that's to sort of help Maddie grow into herself。 To have another reason to fight and not give up。 She has to protect these fools。 But, honestly, I felt no way about any of them。 They were those characters you meet at the story of a horror movie and you instantly know bad things around going to happen to them。 The ending was really good for Near the Bone as well。 It had the old-school horror movie end where they find safety, but you don't know if they actually survived。 There was no prologue。 No three years later。 For me, with these kinds of books, is one of my favorite kind of ending。 Could be a good ending or that creature could have followed them down the mountain and ate them and the ranger。 Who knows?!All in all, I really liked this book and will be adding it to my shelves since I read the e-ARC of this。 It was everything I wanted from a book written by Christina Henry, and I can't wait to see what Henry will write next! 。。。more
